[V8] ODB2/Not V8 related

Hey, well my brother in law has a 96 Acura TL32, and his mechanic is  
an idiot/scammer etc.  I was looking to get him a ODB2 scanner, and  
was wondering if anyone's got any input on this.  His check engine  
light has been on for years, and the mechanic says...."it's normal  
with these cars", and he's spent many hrs to try and  make it go  
out.  He's never replaced the OX sensor since he's owned it 
(120K)....  I see many readers on Ebay/auto store's, but wondering if  
anyone's had any experience with the stuff that's out there, and a  
recommendation on which to buy.  I'm going to replace his ox sensors  
regardless(light might just go out "magically")....but, still want  
him to have the ability to see what's going on.....Car ran smooth and  
nice, but might run like a banshee with that light going  
out?....Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone has an
