[V8] question on CV joints.

It seems to me the tests you describe would be aimed more at wheel bearings
and steering linkage rather than CV joints ... in fact the half shafts are
designed to minimize coupling between powering the wheels and steering.

Depending on what has gotten into the CVJ while the boot was compromised you
may or may not have to replace the CVJs or half shafts. If you haven't done
a lot of driving in mud and such you might want to pull the half shaft,
clean and relubricate it and replace the boots and see how it runs. I'd
expect some sort of grinding or vibration while steering and/or under power.

I have successfully rebuilt several half shafts with damaged boots ... and
have never replaced a CVJ in a half shaft or prop shaft. I have had to
rebuild several prop shafts due to carrier bearings and U-joints ... never a
CVJ ...

Next question. When doing the speed sensors a while ago, I saw both CV
boots on the inboard/outboard LF axle were torn/separated and oozing
green-ish grease. What should I do - have someone repack the joints and
replace the boots, replace both joints, or what? There aren't any obvious
signs of problems like shimmy or shake when driving, nor is the wheel loose
if you jack it and try to forcibly move the tire (or at least that's how I
was taught to check them long ago).

Thanks,

Bryan
