[V8] Well that's your problem right there..

The front mount is more of a torque mount than a motor mount. The gap you
mention indicates that the motor mounts have collapsed, worn, whatever they
do. Another measure of the motor mounts according to several posts I have
seen over the years is that if you can remove the airbox without removing
the strut-to-strut bar, the motor mounts are bad.
I have one V8 with a broken front mount (torque mount) and on all my V8s I'm
able to remove the airbox without removing the strut brace. However I
haven't experienced or noticed anything that concerns me regarding the motor
mounts. Maybe that is because they're all toast and I'm accustomed to
whatever sound or vibration might occur as a result.

So, today it is GORGEOUS out, so I decided to get busy on the audi and
miata today.
So on the plate was the front motor mount on the V8... Which was sheared in
two, of course. The replacement seems far too spongy to do any good, as
well. Now the curious part is that there was a 1/2in gap between the two
pieces of the old mount. This new mount still had to cover this gap, and
appears to have done so by stretching a large bit. I take it this is not
normal... Nor do I see how this can really do much good for 'mounting' the
engine.
Any conjectures here? Both hydraulic mounts out maybe? The car still bucks
a bit going into gear.. So likely the front subby mounts are bad.... Again.
