They are available new, if you know where to look :). They were never available through Audi though.

Scott Phillips nailed the problem.... 
It was a failed CV joint - understand they are not made anymore, fortunately there is a source from a wrecked V8 at the local junk yard. Won't have to cancel subscription with 'audifans' - the 'beast' lives on for a while longer!
