If you add one seperate, I'd put it at the top. That way, if you use it 
while driving, it won't just be pushed down by the wind off the top. Most 
factory setups on wagons and steep window hatchbacks are like this from the 
factory.

One thing you can do to get it free is this. If it flips all the way up to 
stay in position (as for cleaning and whatnot) put it in this pisition with 
the nut pulled. Then, push back and forth in a way that is 90 degrees from 
the pivot of the arm. Basically, you are rocking it back and forth so it 
will come free. I've never had one that didn't come free with this method. 
Just be gentle, you don't want to break the pivot of the arm off by pushing 
farther once it's free.
