Couple notes:

 - The fan may be Left hand thread if I rememeber right - so don't try to tighten it.  You can actually look at the fan blades and tell what way the fan turns, and from there you can figure out which way the nut turns.  Someone correct me here if I'm wrong.
 - I think what others are refering to is that the fan is probably not bad - the bearing that the pulley rides in may be.  They are separate - I have had good luck, dissasembling the bearing, cleaning, reassembling the bearing with a good synthetic grease.  This is only if the bearing is still in good shape just dry or dirty, but not worn.
