[V8] Dimming dash lights, alternator light and cat light

Problem #1 

 Dash lights became dim while driving and car died. 

Problem #2

As the car rolled to a stop and ignition was switch off, notices a bit of smoke from the steering column area.  Mostly around the turn signal stalk. 
There was a metallic smell and not a plastic burning smell. 

Could all if this be related?

I'm thinking it's an alternator but I have not had a chance to inspect it. 
Any feedback would be great.
