[V8] Dimming dash lights, alternator light and cat light

Your evidence all leads directly to the smoking burning thing -
Why do you think it is the alternator?

I would remove the column cover and look for black stuff. Since the engine died, I would look toward the ignition switch, but the clues will be burned and smelly.
