Hi Brad,
funny you should ask - I just had mine off this week.
My light switch was getting erratic - so I took it apart and cleaned it.
It works fine now. Hopefully you can do the same with the wiper switch,
but if not then I don't think the new part is all THAT bad to buy new
(relative to say a new nuke-ya-ler Aircraft Carrier).
First, you have to remove the steering wheel - which means removing the
airbag. There are two torx screws on the backside of the steering wheel
for the airbag. To disconnect the airbag, there is a red connector right
by the wiper switch.
Don't break the clockspring - like I did!!
have the wheels straight ahead when you take things apart, don't turn the
key on with the air bag disconnected or you will set a code that probably
requires a trip to the local shaman to get exorcised. The book says to
disconnect the battery first. Probably a good idea. If you have had the
airbag recall done then there is no connector in the console to worry
about (so the book procedure is wrong here). It is also good to remember
that the airbag is an explosive device. Be careful about static
electricity.
With the wheel off, there is a slot under the column (lower cover) for
access with a phillips screwdriver. Inside the slot is a screw clamp.
Loosen it a few turns and then pull off the whole lower cover with
switches. From there you will see what to do.
On the blower motor, just buy a new one. It is not worth it to put a
used part in there. You really should have the manual to do this job - do
you have it? The procedure is sort of long but it works. The only place
I differ is to remove the hood completely. This is maybe not strictly
necessary but it makes the rest of the job so much easier that I would do
it. It takes all of 5 minutes.
And - I guess I am in the market for a clockspring. Anyone have a source?
