[V8] Was: Replacing the thermostat Is now: Timing belt time

There are 6 total square rings that shrink and start to leak badly over time.  They are blue in color and there are 2 small ones and 4 large ones.  There are two large ones in the rear, one on each distributor mounting block.  One small in the rear over a cam cap.  There are two large and one small all between the back half of the TB cover and the head.  I just bought a set for my A8 (Up to 99 the ABZ motor is basically the same setup as the PT) - they were the same P/N as when I bought a set for my now gone v8.  P/Ns are 077103487A for the large one (x4) and 077103487 for the small ones (x2).  Dont forget to do the cam seals x2(068103085E) the crank seal and oil pump seal (same P/N 054115147B).  You may also consider the Gasket behind the front cover as it can leak (077103161C).  All other parts like the friction pad and rollers that everyone else mentioned should be done as well.  I'm not sure I would 'Goo' them if at all possible - they
are made from silicone and nothing will stick to them.  They are expensive though so it's up to you.  Good luck.

I'll second Dave(while on holiday in Spain.....;-(}  about the removing of the cam plates.  Both the parts car, and the black car had/have small leaks that I'm sure are from those o-ring seals(that I believe are NLA), and no reason not to take them off while in there and goo them up with your favorite sealant.. Might as well also deal with that small cover on the passenger rear head below the distributor(rounded triangle 2 nuts/1 bolt?.....) anyway, they all seem to leak there also.  After doing the belt on the Lago last summer, not even a weep anywhere....for now....kinda nice.  Tom
