[V8] not such great news today

This is what I was afraid would happen - you never know what you are getting with a used motor.  It certainly can't hurt to try additives. There is a fuel system flush too that either takes a special machine (the best way) or you inject the stuff into the intake.  I found a little ATF in the motor oil before a change is magic on noisy lifters.
