This is one of those things that comes w/ lots of practice. People general=
ly get them too tight. Basically, it should be tight, w/ out tension, but =
not floppy. Made sense, didn't it? I tension them to where the belt can b=
e moved slightly accross the pump pulley by pulling it towards you and push=
ing ot away from you w/ your fingers with some effort. It should not vibra=
te (like a guitar stribng) when plucked. If it whines when run, its too ti=
ght. If you have it too loose, you will know it my pushing on it (it will =
be floppy. You basically want to get ALL the loosness out of it, but w/out=
puting it under tension. A slight amount may be o.k. These things actual=
ly get a little tighter as the engine warms up (the block and head expland).
I actually had one that made a loud "rapping" noise for the first couple of=
minutes of engine operation on acceleration ONLY and ONLY if it was colder=
than 30 degrees outside. It took me months to find out what was going on.=
Colder than 30 degrees allowed the belt to vibrate against the lower timi=
ng belt cover. When the engine warmed slightly, it tightened enough and it=
stopped doing it. It even wore a hole in the lower cover! I had no idea =
what it was until I removed the cover to replace the belt.

What is the correct way to estimate the timing belt tension on a 1600 NA
without the special VW tool? The original belt was low milage and twistable
with moderate effort to 45 degrees. I had to pull the injection pump in ord=
er
to extract a busted bolt from the air conditioner compressor bracket. I dec=
ided
to replace the belt since I had it off.
