My mom had a (gas) colt Vista.  Its cat got plugged, mileage suffered, and the car overheated.  Might want to remove the exhaust and peek into the cat.

This is really helping me.
My 92 ECO has 179,000 miles on it and is only getting around 40 MPG. If I
drive it faster than 65mph it runs hot. I may be lazy, but I drive 70-75 and
just have the heat blowing to keep it cool. I have been doing this for about
a year. There is no oil in the coolant yet.
It sounds like it's time to break into the engine, and do the rings and head.
I had been thinking about removing the catalytic converter, because after
those miles it must be bad. and it was making it run hot. Any ideas?
