I found it!  The company below developed and is selling a VW 1.9L, direct injection, mechanically-managed, turbo-diesel engine:

The part number in the left column (about 1/3rd down the table) is:

038 100 021 TDD

There is an "Image" link in the right column.  You can see it looks a little different than a TDI.  Possibly an AAZ block with a TDI head and a different injection pump.
