Since I have previously owned a '97 Jetta with a
factory 1.9TD (Canadian), a '85 Jetta with an
aftermarket 1.9TD (formerly Hayden's), and currently
own a '92 ECOdiesel with a 1.6TD, I am probably
qualified to give you a comparison.
First of all, there is a very noticeable increase in
power with the 1.9TD. Having known only the 1.6NA up
to that point, I was very impressed with the 1.9TD. Of
course, the 1.6 TD in the ECO was also impressive in
its own way, but now that I've dropped the automatic
tranny in, it's a little more sluggish (compared to
the five-speed). Top speed? About 80 in the 1.6, over
120 in the 1.9 (with much more rapid acceleration).
Is the 1.9 worth $3,200? It depends. A lot of
dieseling is pure enjoyment and driving pleasure,
therefore the price should directly correlerate to the
amount of enjoyment derived. I personally have about
$8,000 invested in my rare '92 ECOdiesel, and I can
tell you that I've received that much and more out of
the pleasure she has given me. This Christmas, I'm
taking her on the longest trip since I drove her back
from Phoenix: to Georgia and back to visit my fiancee.
I'm moving there next May, and I'll bring my Jetta
with me.
