I am happy to report that my 86 jetta, is back to life thanks to new piston
rings! This car has been ou t of comission since september with low
compression.
After letting it idle for 20+ minutes, I shut it down and added coolant and
oil. It seemed to need over 4 quarts of oil (rotella 15w40) to mark the
dipstick level. I took it for a ride, and clogged the temporary clear filter I
installed after a few miles. I switched back to the old stock filter and no
problems. I used an electric pump on the return line to purge the system of
air; worked really well.
My return line between the tank and the engine seems to be clogged. I will try
to clear it with compress air tomorrow.
This finale of the rebuild project comes at an excellent time. I just smashed
up my subaru outback by hitting a plow truck in a blizzard a couple of days
ago.
In the mean time, I'm psyched to have finished one of the most complex
mechanical feats I've ever done. Thanks to everone for their assistance, which
has been invaluable.
I should have this thing burning vege oil again in the next few weeks!

Ken
