I think it depends on the rating of the alternator. If you have a big
alternator in your 4x4 then you might not have problems. Maybe someone knows
the rating of the VW, or has done this already.
I run 2 batteries in my BJ-60 and HJ-60 Land Cruisers (but this is stock
:-))

I run dual batteries in my 4x4, works well, no problems charging.
