My thermostat is stuck open in my Jetta.  In the summer the temp needle
never moves past the 1/4 mark driving down the road.  And this past winter I
had no heater at all.

Most thermostats close-up when they fail.  This causes the motor to overheat
and can damage the motor.  VW is smart enough to design their thermostats to
stay open when they fail.
