Loren with your cross-hatching...is it possible that some kind of controlled
'knurling' or cross rifling that leaves minute trails of lubrication would be
the best option ?

Did you look at that link with regard the 'Running in' window of opportunity?
Maybe this had a bearing on the 15K return of oil consumption; so perhaps
there is a correlation between honing technique and running in method...after
all if take thehead of an engine that does not burn oil... the bores are
always 'shiny' and you can never say "Oh I can see that guy must of done a
good cross hatch hone 25000 miles ago"

Harmon you worry about ham fisted pounding of cylinders and the possibility of
bending conrods?...I'm assuming that the 'pounder' isnt some oversized 'hill
billy' but a person of descretion...(unlike my ex brother inlaw)...Surely if
the 'lummux' has taken the engine out of gear; and we're not at BDC ;-) there
will be no force on the rod unless someone filled the sump with water as
well....in which case the engine probably a 'boat anchor' anyway...

Youre obviously a dab-hand with an Oxy set....but havent you ever cracked a
bore with that localized heating?
