  Not exactly.  Most dust is silica based from dirt/rocks.  It's highly
abrasive
and wears rings and cylinder walls.  Think of my area after Mt. St. Helens
blew. I figure that has a lot to do with seeing very few diesels of that era
with
more than 100,000 miles and reasonable bores.  :(

True, but you can look at it the other way as to what it'll cost you to
replace it.
  I bought my 5000TD for $650.  I figured I could get a bit over $3000 for
it with new rings.  I took too long doing it and my wife sat in it, in the
shop one evening.  She wanted to keep it!  I could look at it two ways.
I was getting a nice car for about $700 or that it was potentially costing
me $3000.  :P
