My question is how the contact could have happened. The engine has never been
over-revved. I used the pin, plate and timing mark to keep the cam, pump and
crank in the proper relationship when I changed the timing belt. I rotated
the
engine by hand for a few revs with no contact after the timing belt change.
To put it simply, it happens. It can turn over fine and not feel contact
but still have it. The belt tension nees to be set before the cam timing.
So, you either set everything and then recheck the cam timing or you
almost snug down the cam bolt, set belt tension and THEN snug up
the bolt. That'll keep the crank and cam together. The pump can
then be adjusted and no dimensions change. Setting belt tension
with TDC and cam locked will put the cam a bit out of time.
