I knew of a guy who sold custom trailers and made a point of not installing
those bearing caps with the grease fittings on it. He said that never once
did he have a trailer blow a bearing. The only ones he saw with toasted
bearings were the ones with those caps, or ones where the grease never got
changed.

Loren the big knockers was a reference to big end [or little end] wear and
not 'detonation'... in which you are absolutely correct... Derek I've heard
of this overpacking with grease thing... but is it an uban legend? Surely
any xs will escape in most cases.
I have always been generous in my greasing of the taper bearings for
instance and never noticed life shortening...
