[Vwdiesel] Oil when the frost is on the Pumpkin ?

I use synthetic in my "old" Rabbits also. Both of them are '81 models.
One uses some oil b/t 5K oil changes but I don't mind a couple of bucks
and it runs just great. I'm also going to put syn in the gearboxes
before winter this year. Synthetic is some slippery stuff! I think it
is better in the diesels that aren't on their last leg. Hagar is
talking about the "burn quality" in a diesel using oil. You never
answered that question Chris.

I'm just asking a question. I'd like to know why Hagar thinks an old VW
diesel "needs" dino oil. As I've already stated, my "old" Jetta is
quite
happy using full synthetic 15w-40. No oil consumption, superior engine
protection, easier cold starts, and longer drain intervals.

Of course it would be rather expensive to use synthetic oil in an engine
that uses oil, or leaks oil. But then again, one shouldn't assume just
because it's an "old" VW diesel that it must be using or leaking oil.
Mine
does neither.

If you're going to run synthetic in the winter, you might as well run it
year round.

Now Chris, Let's not start this type of adversarial discussion again.
Hagar is talking cost comparison and oil as a fuel in the combustion
chamber. What is your opinion on the combustive properties of SYN vs.
Dino? Does SYN burn clean when it works it's way into the cylinder? Is
it as good a "fuel" as Dino?

Along these lines, depending upon your answer, Dino might be a good way
to go in warm climes or seasons for oil burners when one contemplates
the cost disparity b/t SYN and Dino.

Why do you think someone "needs" dino above freezing?

Yes Chuck and all ---When the frost really hits ---only one type of
oil
will do

SYN------ really skinny Syn ----I totally agree. NO matter how old
your
VW is if you
wake up to 42 below in the morning ? you need SYN. ----above freezing
?
you need DINO.

Shit winter is on the way Yikes.

Hagar.
