However, our aircraft mechanic insists that we _never_ use oil lube
on the bendix/pinion area. Silicone spray only. He says the oil
based stuff gums up and catches dirt, causing failures.
Anyone have any comments? I'm just starting research on this one.

Val and all : Here is my experience -- The best way to make a Bendix slide
real easy is a DRY lube. The best that I know about is Dow Corning
Molykote G-rapid spray. --mine is a 400g spray bomb.
It was a corporate donation many years ago -- I intended to use it on the lathe
and milling machine etc. It is dry so chips do not stick. But I wound up using
it on the VW steering rack and the starter. I do not know much about silicone
spay used on a bendix ---but it works other places.
Pull the bendix back so you can pray the grooves. I agree DRY lube is best.
Hagar.
