Hi Nick,
I would love to offer an opinion on your engine since we have had similar
results with our rebuilds but with my success rate I am going to let
someone else answer your ring questions. My bet will be that you should not
reuse rings but think you should wait for an expert to answer. Also when I
do it again I will go with the chromed rings that Loren suggests. My 25k
rebuild is now on my garage floor waiting to be torn down again. I put my
$300 junkyard 1.6 na in last week. It started and ran pretty good and did
not smoke at all like my rebuilt. I felt I may have turned a corner. I went
to top off the coolant and noticed a thin layer of nice black diesel oil
floating on top Monday night. I hoped it might have been from rough
handling when the engine was pulled and on its side and all the
transporting of the engine but still don't know. I flushed the coolant
system and while it was warming up the engine stalled very abruptly while
I was revving it up some. I actually think it ran out of fuel. I put 5
gallons in last night and it will not start now. It tries and makes black
smoke. I don't know if it could have slipped timing or not but plan to
start there tonight.
One thing I do feel qualified to offer an opinion on is make your garage as
big as you can afford :)
Gook Luck!
Bart
