The engine/tranny are bolt-in compatable. no surprises (my surprise, the
Carat has power steering. found a pulley off something else that matched the
pump.)
The only significant change would be to remove the gasser fuel pump from
under the body near the right rear wheel and join the lines together, you
can leave the gas tank as is, with the lift pump operating, (helps with
tired injection pumps and line air leaks)
Oh, and DO install a proper diesel fuel filter in the engine room in the
fuel fed to the injection pump.
The wire that went to the ignition coil now goes to the stop solenoid, oils
and temp sensors hook up same as gas, remove the computer and ignition
module and the wiring attached to them.
You have to decide if you want the glow plugs to be automatic or manual.
You can salvage a glow plug relay from the diesel you got the engine from if
you want automatic, but you need to salvage the temp sensore that went with
it , and wire it all together.
Not rocket science, but can be daunting for non-geek types.
I'm doing a gas Carat right now. If anyone wants details how to do the
gloplug relay transplant, let me know. too long to post here. My entire glo
system will be underhood instead of on the relay box (sigh of relief)
The manual trick is very easy. Heavy wire from + batt terminal thru 50 amp
fuse to driver position, heavy duty push switch (like old fashioned starter
switch), heavy wire back to #4 gloplug.
Hold for 30 secs and start, release. Below zero, hold 60 to 90 sec. and
start, continue holding until engine runs smoothly, release.. I really
prefer this method, but not good for uneducated (don't understand diesels)
drivers.
