think it'll be a big deal as far as noise goes. It currently has a
3-muffler set-up, which I assume would have been OE an S-class. My friend
is somewhat hesitant at spending the $1100.00 (CDN) that he was quoted to
replace the exhaust. Any thoughts on the mufflerectomy?

My old 1968 200d , I drove for 20 years, MIRIP.

When the original system rotted out, I retained the original muffler, at the
extrem back, (it lasted the whole 20 years) and replaced the rest with
canadian tire flex, from just aft of the engine, where a short length of
original down pipe remained, to the input of the muffler.

I would have to replace the flex every 2 or 3 years (Damned salt) but in the
15 years or so, the cost for flex never came close to what the MB fix would
have cost. It had a slightly more authoritive note, but could never have
been described as noisey.

To some extent, I'm doing the same on my Volks A2. I pick up the exhaust
pipe a foot from the engine where it straightens out horizontal, Use a piece
of 2" from there back to the end of the floor panel, then join a piece of
flex from there to the muffler. The muffler is quite old, may even be the
original (1987, 450,000km) I have welded in new end bulkheads, new tail
pipe, replaced the hangers, and it soldiers on.

Oh yes, My name is Cameron. We are thrrrrifty.
