Actually, the bigger issue was that they removed too much of the aromatics from the fuel (which was done while lowering the sulphur content) which caused seals to dry ou and shrink, causing leaks.  Once they finished "testing" the new fuel formulation out
on the CA drivers, they added the aromatics back in, but it was too late for nearly every injection pump, including mine.  Something they really should have tested out before forcing the new blend on the entire population.

I get somewhere in the 35-37 MPG range on the stuff with my Caddy (1.9D engine).  I once got 44 on a trip where I held the speed to 55 or less.
