[Vwdiesel] Strange TDC conundrum

I have had a few responses about using the audi FW as a refference.
Interestingly, it has the same bolt pattern as the "backwards" clutch / FW
assy of the A2 diesel..
I only looked at the audi FW because I had beirfly bolted it to another NA
diesel to see if it would work for the generator. Of course, it won't fit
inside the A2 bell housing or allow the starter to engage, because it's
about 1/4" bigger than the A2 ring gear/FW assy.
Any way, I talked to a friend who is an A2 specialist, and he figures the
dowels might have been removed for machining, and/or, the original FW bolt
holes in the PP may have been stripped, and they re-indexed it to another
set of holes. I have noted that there are a lot more holes in the PP than
are needed for 8 bolts and 2 dowels.
Anyway, as long as it runs and doesn't come apart, it can stay that way
until I need to do the clutch again, then I will solve the mystery.
I think it needs some hillbilly tuning , as right now, it starts without
pulling the cold start lever, and if I do pull the knob when it's running,
it slows slightly, and sounds harsh.
So after I get the belt on, I'm going to tweak the pump.
I suspect it was left a bit advanced after the goofy assembly job.
I expect the cam may be slightly advanced too, perhaps half a degree.
I may pull an injector anyway. Is it a problem to get a thin wire down
through the prechamber?
I could pull the pan too, but it would probably be difficult to eyeball half
a degree at TDC by the con rods.
I'll just hillbilly tweak it to the sweet spot..
Sandy
