I have the empirical evidence as to exactly why you don't want to use 
the old hose pieces with a copper splice.  I let myself get talked into 
that a thousand miles away from home with another thousand to go before 
I turned homeward.  Made it just to the farmost point and then burst for 
good and stranded me somewhere outside of Ashville, NC.  Not the best 
place to try and find a funky VW hose on a weekend in a hurry.  If I'd 
had a working car, it would have been geat.  Beautiful country out 
there.  On foot, though, it's real monotonous.
