[Vwdiesel] A1 Burping Procedures

One more newbie question, ok maybe two. I was looking/analyzing the
water pump replacement task last night when I notice water
seeping/dripping from the weep hole. I opened the expansion tank and it
started pouring out. My guess was the shaft seal is shot. Second
thought/question. Does the engine have to be retimed to do the water
pump replacement? I appears that removal of the crankshaft pulley, etc.
is necessary. I was really hoping that there were only the four bolts
that you can see.

If you don't have any handy, you'll want some good penetrating
oil, torch,
a couple new 6mm by about an inch bolts... There's about a half
dozen
or so bolts holding the pump to the housing. You generally
break one
or two. Work them back and forth and if you have an acetylene
torch
available, use it on any that don't break free easily.
Sometimes they
just snap first thing. The good news is they usually leave
enough for vise
grips to grab. Sometimes it's a bit short and you have to weld
a nut to
it to get it out. I've even had to center drill and keep
drilling until I got to
the threads then spiral out what's left.
My Jetta had some pretty bad caviatation on the smooth, shaped
part,
inside, right where it's close to the impeller. Neve had one
that way before
	but worth actually looking for.
