[Vwdiesel] A2 front wheel bearing tips?

My '85 Jetta has a failing front wheel bearing - lots of noise, and noticeable 
play. I have a new bearing, and am wondering if I should attempt to do this on 
my own without a press? If I can locate proper sized steel pipe to support 
inner & outer races, I'm thinking of trying to carefully tap the old bearing out & 
new one in this way. 
I've done this for other procedures where a press is called for, such as Jetta & 
Vanagon control arm bushings, but never with a bearing the size of this.
Should I attempt this, or just take it to a machine shop?
