[Vwdiesel] Re-ringing a Rabbit --(the Wineland way )

Ok a recap. It is a 1.6 NA from a '86 so hydraulic. Just put in a new set
of standard size rings since the ones in my "rebuild" with 25k miles were
shot. Very shiny cylinders. Nice crosshatch now. First time starting it
the cam pulley spun and I figured I probably trashed things. Maybe not
since it has hydraulic lifters and they would not have been pumped?
Compression test says it may be ok but not sure yet. After much advice
from several helpful souls especially Loren I got the bubbles out of the
fuel line so it would run and I "think" the timing is good. I did line up
all the marks. Now it starts and idles pretty well and doesn't sound bad
except lots of White smoke. Rev it up and lots and lots of white smoke.
Try to test drive now and lots and lots more white smoke and as soon as I
wind it up at all with some load the oil pressure buzzer and light come on
making me retreat back to the garage. Going to get a oil pressure gauge to
screw in to see what is actually happening per Loren. Hagar I know you are
right about mindset and the magnum bottle of wine is helping but I would
never have gotten this far without the list. I think it was after 1:00 am
when I was waiving my white flag last night so I am not really ready to
give up. The oil pressure is what is scaring me most. Not sure if that is
still effects of "the incident" When this is done I doubt I will be smart
enough to offer any how to's but I definitely have a couple of how not to's
to share. For now back to the wine :)
Thank you,
Bart
