I did mine on either an A2 or my Quantum, can't remember which, now, but I
had access to a large hydraulic press through work. (not any more) They do
require a considerable amount of force to press in and out. I pulled the
whole knuckle and strut assembly as a unit so I wouldn't have to bother with
aligning it when I put it back together. Worked just fine, though I had to
scrounge around to find the correct combination of sockets, pipe fittings,
and random pieces of round stock to fit the bearings and housing.
I had to do them on my A3 Jetta this past winter. An amateur radio friend
is a mechanic at the local VW/Audi dealer and he was nice enough to bring
home his OTC kit so we could do it in his garage. This is one of the "do it
on the car" deals, and it worked very well. Pretty expensive kit for a
shadetree mechanic, though. Nice to have friends in high places. :-))
I still maintain, counter to what Hagar claims, that once you press them
out they are destroyed. Once they start making noise, they're toast, anyway.
Just as easy to put new ones in if you're that far in, IMHO.
