You'll take the timing belt off. You'll also need it off
if you have to pull the cam for inspection.

Loren mentioned plastigauge. Good advise (check his post).
If your tolerances are way off, you might see gaps large
enough to slip a thin feeler in there. If that happens,
	you'll probably pull the head.

As I suggested before, don't worry about the injectors, and
likewise, don't worry about the catalytic converter. You can
deal with both of those after you get the engine running
	without lots of oil.

I haven't done it on a VW, but you can most likely replace
valve seals from the top, with the cam off. If the cam
bearings are off, you'll have to pull the head for the
	machine shop, but hopefully not.

To run the pump, I've used a small rubber sanding drum on an
angle head drill. You might also be able to get to it through
the distributor / vac pump area, but you'll need at least a
loose timing belt. I'd just take it off. It's only about
20 minutes to take it off and put it back on.

Finally, don't just listen to me on this, as I haven't had
this type of problem. Some of the guys here have had different
	experiences.

	Again, good luck.

	Val
