It would be nice if we could do a quick litmus paper
test on the fuel first at suspect diesel pumping
stations.

There is a quick and dirty test for water in fuel,
that stuff that turns purple when you put it on a
stick and dip in tank, yes, but not the other stuff
you are saying that could be mixed in with the fuel. 
I try and get my fuel from the place on the NJ
Turnpike, price is state regulated and they pump tons
of fuel a day.  But you can't always do that.

Trust, it surely is not what is was when you were a
kid Sandy, sad to say.
