Theory: new nozzles and slightly higher breaking pressures for injectors
makes for better spray patterns and finer overall atomization. That leads to a
more complete burn.
Experience: New Nozzles = No Smoke. If after changing nozzles, one
increases fueling until a bit of "fog in the headlights" appears, then mpg's suffer.
I've noticed it fairly dramatically in my TD vanagon. There is a nice spot of
no smoke and decent performance. When fueling increases from there, fuel
economy declines rapidly. Smoke increases rapidly also. That's my experience so
far.
