Theory: new nozzles and slightly higher breaking pressures for injectors 
makes for better spray patterns and finer overall atomization.  That leads to a 
more complete burn.
Experience:  New Nozzles = No Smoke.  If after changing nozzles, one 
increases fueling until a bit of "fog in the headlights" appears, then mpg's suffer.  
I've noticed it fairly dramatically in my TD vanagon.  There is a nice spot of 
no smoke and decent performance.  When fueling increases from there, fuel 
economy declines rapidly.  Smoke increases rapidly also.  That's my experience so 
far.
