[Vwdiesel] TD black smoke adjustments?

Just went out to the store for beer, pulled the aneroid line and not a
whiff of smoke!

The moderate lack of power correlated exactly with the lack of smoke,
previous no smoke periods (lower rpm) had the same acceleration,
previously smoky periods (higher rpm/load/turbo boost) were less
powerful. At least the turbo works :).

When I put the line back in, I got a big black cloud on the first boost.

So is this an aneroid adjustment, or a max fuel screw adjustment, or
should I "T" in a boost gauge on the turbo to aneroid line (I can't
figure out where else to put it).

It seems that the if the aneroid is limiting the max fuel, and I like
where it's boosting (1/2 way through an acceleration), then by turning
the max fuel down I would still get the same acceleration at low rpms,
but less under boost (as the aneroid would open up to the new lower max
fuel setting)... Or, am I mistaken, and lowering the max fuel screw
would also slow down my non-boost times as well? I'm not quite sure
what aneroid adjustment I could make to lower the smoke, especially
since I like the way it's boosting now (well, except for the black
clouds.)

I do own the VE yellow tech manual somewhere, but after the move a year
ago, I still don't have enough bookshelf space and I haven't found it
digging through the boxes..

Thanks Loren for getting the ideas flowing.

Will.
