  Hopefully it didn't do like Nicks crank index!
  The cam is a tapered fit on the #1 end.  I think it's a machined flat, 
no key on the back end and like you said, keyed on the pump.  I 
originally set pump timing by loosening the back gear bolt and 
slipping the gear to get timing right.  Takes a special, long allen to 
loosen the pump and rotate it.  Was almost as easy to loosen the 
gear. 
  Check your cam timing.  If it's ok then it's the back gear.  If it's off 
then it's your crank gear or the cam gear.
  Don't use anything on the mating surfaces unless you want to lap 
them in, use lapping compound then clean them off.
