[Vwdiesel] hardware question

Now that I have the TDI back together, I need to find a few bits and
pieces to make sure it stays that way. One is the kind of partially
deformed nuts that hold the exhaust manifold on. Due to wear and
occasional loss of parts, I didn't have a full set. I'm told that plain
nuts will work loose and fall off and that lockwashers lose their temper
and quit after a few heating cycles. I asked the dealer about new
locknuts and they wanted $5/nut. I'm not giving them $40 for that.
That's twice what I paid for the head bolts. I had thought about
finding some brass nuts and deforming those some, but I can't even find
those in metric at the hardware stores. There's not really enough room
to jam nut them either. Any good ideas before I spend a lot of time
re-inventing the wheel?
