[Vwdiesel] hardware question

nuts so they have a semicircle of flesh. Or maybe lock
additional nuts onto simple nuts...

Now that I have the TDI back together, I need to find a few
bits and
pieces to make sure it stays that way.  One is the kind of
partially
deformed nuts that hold the exhaust manifold on.  Due to
wear and
occasional loss of parts, I didn't have a full set.  I'm
told that plain
nuts will work loose and fall off and that lockwashers lose
their temper
and quit after a few heating cycles.  I asked the dealer
about new
locknuts and they wanted  $5/nut.  I'm not giving them $40
for that.
That's twice what I paid for the head bolts.  I had thought
about
finding some brass nuts and deforming those some, but I
can't even find
those in metric at the hardware stores.  There's not really
enough room
to jam nut them either.  Any good ideas before I spend a lot
of time
re-inventing the wheel?
