>Hagar zes yes Gavrik you are correct it looks like you
>have a borderline worn pump.

Hagar, If this is true then why did the performance go to
hell so suddenly. For six months after the engine was
rebuilt it was easy to get over 49 mpg on the freeway and
it smoked very little. Then suddenly (in a day), around
six months ago it started smoking and the fuel consumption
went up. I would think that a aging pump would degrade
gradually.

After that can of Diesel Purge, a test drive up to
Hurricane Ridge on the Olympic Peninsula resulted in 43.8
mpg. This is better then the before Diesel Purge test
where it only got 41 mpg.

It has been my experience that climbing mountains (and
descending again) does not reduce my average mileage very
much (not as much as high speed). So, even though the
Hurricane Ridge test drive was not ideal (5200ft and wet
road), I figure that 43.8 mpg shows that something is
still wrong.

Today I am doing a second can of Purge and will take it
for another test drive. No idea if this will do anything
other then result in a pickled pump.

I looked through my collection of 14,000 mail list posts
and did not find Lorens post. What posting are you
referring to?

>make sure your timing belt is NOT too tight.

If I move the belt (between the cam and pump sprockets) up
and down (not twisting) it moves around 1/2 inch. If, in
the same location, I use maximum finger force to twist the
belt, I am able to rotate the belt about 80 degrees. Is
this OK?
