[Vwdiesel] New clutch slipping like mad

Good question. I had a friend purchase it for me. (I
was heading to his house to replace it, and decided I
didn't want to use a used pressure plate and disc so I
had him pick up a new one.) He told me that the guys
double checked that it was a diesel engine/tranny
combo, and when they got it out they looked at it and
said, "Yup, it looks like a diesel clutch". He's had
good luck with those guys before, and they seem to
specialize in VWs.

It was made by Valero and sold by BeckArnley
Worldparts. Never had a Valero clutch (always Sachs
before) but had good luck with other B/A parts.

Anyway, after I wrote that original email, I did some
research online quickly and found mentions of breaking
in a new clutch in other makes of vehicle. Most
mentioned about 500 miles of easy around town driving.

So, I drove around town for a little while and it
seemed to be okay, so I took off for home.

At first, it was slipping at anything above about
2000-2500 RPM in 5th, so I was going very slow.
(Don't know how slow, because I forgot to unhook the
speedo cable when we removed the trans and currently
the speedo doesn't work... I know a guy was really
hacked that he had to follow me for a few minutes...)

Anyway, I turned north on the interstate and after a
couple minutes, it was like it "caught" and stopped
slipping, so I thought all was well. Now, I think a
lot of it had to do with the fact that the very strong
wind was at my back. As soon as I turned east and had
that wind at my side, and was going up a hill, it
returned to slipping at engine speeds over 2500 RPM.
So, I pulled over and called Triple A. Luckily I had
driven to within 100 miles of my house, so the tow
didn't cost me anything.

Do any of you think I have any chance of saving that
clutch without pulling the trans? Yesterday the
weather turned all to crap so I don't want to... (I
thought about dumping a bunch of brake cleaner in the
inspection hole...)

On the plus side, shifting and gear selection is much
improved thanks to new bushings and proper adjustment.

Thanks,

David
