[Vwdiesel] Doyt's door problems

I agree.
When I first got my 89 Jetta, it was used by a courier to carry bank bags.
He NEVER used the rear doors for at least a couple hundred thou kms. It cost
me both door handles to open. What was screwed was rust had stuck the
sliding gizmo inside the door latch that locks the pawl. I could have
fished throught the door panel, reached the top the latch, and never had
enough force at hand to depress it... I had to wiggle and wiggle through the
handle hole to get it free enough to open. Once open, I disassembled the
latch mechanism, all that was wrong was it had a film of rust from the
stupid angle the latch sits at collecting water. Keeping it fairly soaked
in water displacing lube fixes this. All the parts polished up nicely and
the latch is still in use.
You can cut the handle in the middle with a saw or bolt cutter, then grab
the remains on the latch side and pull ... it just pops off like it was
meant to do so. Then you can see the top of the latch with the little paddle
that you have to fuss with.

Unfortunately, it's sounding like the best bet will be to sacrifice your
outer handles. After carefully cutting them away, you should be able to
actuate the mechanism inside to open the door. Chances are the handles are
shot and need to be replaced anyhow. Best of luck, Doug
