Hmmm,
Ihad an '86 190D 2.5 which routinely got 32mpg in town and 40 on the
hwy. It was a 2.5l I-5 non-turbo with a 4 speed slushbox. Sluggish at
the start, but once rolling, it was a real pleasure to drive.

If it wasn't for the really cramped rear seat leg room, I would probably
still have it.

Ten years before, I looked at a early 80's 300d (TD) which had a 35gal
aux tank in the trunk. He 'claimed' he got an easy 35mpg. Thses are big,
heavy cars.
