Hagar, It pleases me that you approve of the masking tape idea. The
paint would be best and would work the same way as tape but last much
longer indeed. The point here as I see it is that we are not marking
the exact spot with a pinstripe line. The disruption of the "painted
plane" provides the DIY'er the vantage necessary to determine how much
that pump moved and which direction.

Scribe marks? I like to use a piece of that green masking tape. Clean
the area well, cut a piece of tape just the right length and press in on
across the IP and bracket. Then with a sharp blade, cut the tape at the
junction b/t mount and IP. When you move the pump you can see exactly
how far it has been moved. The tape will stay there for many months
depending upon the weather.
