  I wonder if the seal you bought from the bearing place was constructed of
the appropriate material to be resistant to diesel fuel?
 I think I'd want to be using a seal made from Viton, which I'm pretty sure
would cost more than just three bucks. Viton is expensive when compared to
nitrile or buna rubber.
 What color was the rubber material, if you remember? Often times, but not
always, Viton is some color other than black.
 In a previous career, I used to work at a factory that compounded it's own
rubber for the seals we produced. Professional curiosity, if nothing else.
