Hi , Thanks for all the wise advice!
The Jetta lost about the same as Lorens, Went from filling up every 3 or 3
1/2 weeks to filling up every 2 weeks. I was getting about 40 in town and
now about 33 or so. It's running a bit rough but not bad
though. I've seen diesel from about 2.33/gal to 3.19/gal in Chicago ouch!
Here where I live it's between 2.33 to 2.99 - weird then across the street
it's 2.79/gal go figure.. The lifters are mechanical - so I'd suppose they
need adjustment again. I don't have more than 3k since the head work was
done. Thanks again for the help. Jeff

A valve adjustment makes a biiiig difference. Tight valves are a real
mileage killer on the mechanical heads, remember, they wear tighter, not
looser, so you never hear rattly valves to remind you. TIght intake valves
kill off the harmonic advantage of the intake runners.
It's a good idea to routinely do this. You get pretty good at it, and it
keeps tab on the wear... once a year is good. If you don't have the time
for it, then keep close tabs on the exhaust sound at idle. Get to know it,
and recognize when it changes, when the pulses are different. Holding a
piece of paper over the tailpipe is a good indicator- do this when valve
set is poor, then repeat after you set the valves. You'll see what I mean.
Winter fuel is a mileage sucker too. Way less jam than summer juice.
