[Vwdiesel] need fuel pump to keep engine running?

I've had a couple of things cause this problem. My van sat for 2 years,
and would clog the filter right away. The pump would make it run for a
bit.
The PO had installed a pre-filter (which I think is a good idea)
underneath, near the fuel tank. Both that filter, and the stock one would
clog.
I finally had to pull the tank and wash it out thoroughly. It's not as
hard as one might think.
Another problem that required running the fuel pump was leaking lines and
fittings. They would leak fuel, and let air in. A replaced all the fuel
lines, and tightened the input banjo on the IP, and all was well.
Of course, you could always have crud in your IP, but I doubt it.
Drain all the nasty fuel, replace your filter(s), check line and fittings
and replace as required. That should do it.
