I'm assuming you checked stuff, like the output voltage with your VOM
(vom'ing in the rain...) and verified that the light is telling the
truth..., that there is excitation voltage at the light wire and stuff.
I second the cd manual blows chunks compared to the paper manual.
Have you upgraded to the new bentley software Val? It is much better
than the old explorer window based system, which sucked at the very best
of times. New one is a free upgrade, it isn't half as bad as the old
stuff, but an old school analog paper book is still the far far better
manual. (I have the cd for the Passat)
If you're sure it's the reg, not wires, just change the reg in situ. It
isn't a big deal to pull the alt really, just wires off, belt off, bolts
out, alt out, assembly is reverse of disassembly. The serpentine belt
is kind of nice when you've had the opportunity to fight with the
tensioner on a A2 with A/C.
